How it works

Five nouns carry the whole thing.

Make a pact with the people you share money with. Add expenses as they happen. Everyone sees the same balances. When it's time to settle, Pennypact prepares the payment for your own payment app and keeps the record of what happened.

The five parts of a pact

  1. Pact

The people, the split rules they all approved, and everything that follows.

  2. People

Members with a full account, or guests acting from a link you sent them.

  3. Expenses

Who paid what, when, and how it splits. Never rewritten; corrections are new versions.

  4. Balances

One number per person: you're owed, you owe, or settled up.

  5. Settle up

A payment request in the form your payment app expects, then two taps to confirm.

1 · Make the pact

Everyone approves once. Then expenses can start.

Three short steps: what the pact is, who's in it, how it splits. The split rules only take effect when every member has approved them, and changing them later needs everyone again — not one person's quiet edit.

About

A name, what kind of pact it is (a shared home, a trip, a loan, a group gift) and the currency. Trips add dates; a gift adds the target and who's collecting.

People

Add people by name and email or phone. Each gets an invitation link. You can add people later, and someone without an account can take part as a guest from their link.

Split rules

How expenses split by default: equally, by percent, by shares or by amount, with a live meter that shows it adds up. Pick the clear day, when balances are summarized each month, and whether to simplify debts.

2 · Add expenses

Amount first. Everything else has a sensible default.

Type the amount, say what it was, tap who paid. It splits by the pact's rules unless you change it for this one expense, and you see each person's share before you save.

Saved, then published

A new expense shows "Saved privately · awaiting Base" on its row, then "Published on Base" and "Base finalized" as its fingerprint goes out. You don't wait for any of that; the record is yours the moment you save.

No signal? Saved on this device.

Expenses you add offline save on your phone and send when you're back. The row says so until it goes through, and tells you if something needs attention.

Corrections are change requests

Nothing is edited in place. To fix an expense, request a change and the group approves it; the old version stays in the history. To remove one, the same. To flag a problem, dispute it without deleting it.

3 · Settle up

Request. Pay in your own app. Two taps to confirm.

Pennypact suggests who pays whom, such as "Dev pays Mira ₹1,200.00", and prepares the payment for the app the payer chooses. It is never in the transfer, so it never guesses whether the money moved. You tell it.

  1. Request

Whoever is owed taps Request next to the suggested payment. The payer gets the ask in the chat they already use, with the amount and the breakdown.

  2. Payment details

The payer picks how they'll pay: UPI, Interac, Zelle, cash or something else. We show the details that app expects, each with a copy button, or a code to scan where the app reads one.

  3. I've sent it

The payer sends from their own app and taps "I've sent it". The record says Sent, not Settled, because only the other person can say it arrived.

  4. Confirm received

The person who was paid taps "Confirm received". Now it's settled, and that confirmation is itself a record with an on-chain fingerprint.

A request nobody acts on expires after 30 days, with a notice. Cash works too: the payer marks it sent, the other confirms, and the record shows both.

Guests

Nobody has to install anything to pay you

Every request carries a link. Someone without an account opens it in any browser and sees only that one thing: the rules to approve, or the bill to pay, or the payment to confirm.

Nothing leaks in a preview

A link opens a plain page first. The details appear only when the person taps Continue, so a chat preview never shows the amount or the names.

Keep it private

Forwarding a link forwards its one job to whoever gets it, until it expires or you replace it. Treat it like the bill it shows. You can rotate a link at any time.

Come back as a guest

A guest can return with a code sent to the same email or phone, see their share and their history, and open a full account whenever they like.

Verified record

Check this record

Every accepted record gets a privacy-blinded fingerprint published on Base and checkpointed once a day on Ethereum. Open any record and you'll see where it is: Saved privately, Published on Base, Base finalized, Checkpointed on Ethereum.

What it shows

That this record existed by that moment and hasn't changed since. Nothing on-chain names a person, an amount or a description; the fingerprint means nothing without your private copy.

What it doesn't show

Whether the expense was fair, or whether the money actually moved. Those are between the people in the pact, and the record simply keeps what they said.

Download the record

From any record you can download a small file with the parts you're allowed to see, and check it with an independent verifier — without asking Pennypact, and even if Pennypact is gone.
